Firstly, Happy New Year!

I sat down and watched the New Year in with a JD & Coke and a bowl of ready salted Hula Hoops. As the stroke of midnight loomed I decided to capture any local fireworks with my new camera. Quickly flicking through the Index 'B' revealed nothing about Burst Shot mode. At 55 seconds to go I readily washed my hands of crispness and cracked open the case, only to smudge grease onto the rubber parts of the camera.

In my typical pedantic perfection I hastily tried cleansing it with a towel and ruffed it up even more. Bah! What's more the fireworks were out of shot. There was however much beeping of horns (some on large ships!) and plenty of JD left in the bottle. All's well that ends well.

My New Years resolutions are therefore, in no particular order:

  • Don't be so pedantic about wear & tear
  • Do learn to drive
  • Don't invest my emotions in others
  • Do learn the wonders of SLR photography
  • Stop smoking!

Off to a good start, I've been reading up on said wonders and decided, in my n00b wisdom, I need a prime lens for macro shots. I also now know how focal ranges, apertures and angles relate to each other.

The night is young. I'm off to watch TV and break my first and last New Years resolutions hehe. Adios!

:) You are best served by the 2.8 100mm macro lens - there were two, one had a faster USM motor than the other but in optical terms pretty well identical results... I had one but sold it (with my 10D Canon) when I moved to camera stabilized Pentax K10D when my old shaking grip was no longer stable enough for slow shots in available light! Good luck there Martin!

Hehe, perhaps I haven't nailed down the focal ranges as well as I had thought. My current lens is 18-55mm -- I was expecting to get something in this range for macro shots. I guess 100mm has a greater focal length (zoom) and thus is better for extreme close-ups?
