Night Skies presents itself as being 'Based on a true story', specifically a UFO encounter over southern-western USA on March 13th, 1997. The outline looks quite promising, the plot formed from regression therapy taken from a witness to some strange events that bestoyed a small group that fateful day. The film opens with a girl frantically running in the dark escaping an unseen predator. The predator seems to make a strange Qwaaaaark sound, all the rage now-a-days. Personally I find it rather childish. She finally reaches a house and enters, but no-ones home. The door caves in.
We are quickly shuffled along to 5 friends joking around whilst making there way through back-roads, lost in the dark, driving an old RV. I shall introduce the characters as arse-breathe, Joe, dune-bug, pretty-blonde and pink-top (with nice boobies).
Whilst traversing the road to nowhere the tension builds up, we see some strange lights in the sky, pink-top has a nightmare involving said aliens, Joe nearly impales himself on a knife, and the radio makes funny squelchy noises. Soon one of the motley crew notices the lights in the sky. Arse-breathe leans over to take a peek and subsequently crashes the RV into a tree, barely missing another vehicle parked up in the road. In the collision Joe manages to impale himself with that knife, a walking fire-hazard if you ask me, he spilt an alco-pop over the radio earlier. Arse-breathe is pissed he crashed the RV and takes it out on the driver of the other driver of the other vehicle, we shall call him army-vet. The scene is set, gentle mist rolls across the tarmac, strange lights adorn the sky, scary aliens want to abduct you, and good 'ol Joe needs urgent medical attention. Luckily for Joe army-vet has some medical training. Unfortunately the RVs first-aid kit is empty, it seems some gaffer tape, super-glue and a bottle of vodka will do though. Pretty soon they figure they're stranded and they'll need to go find some help. Arse-breathe and army-vet venture into the adjacent woods in the hope of finding a barn. Trundling through the woods they notice a strange noise, shortly after arse-breathe vanishes into mid air, more childish Qwaaaaaark sounds, flashes of aliens running behind trees, and suddenly a figure coming towards army-vet. He panics and shoots, you guessed it, arse-breathe falls to the ground.
I kind of lost interest at this point and decided to surf some videos on Digg, I did have one eye on the gripping action though. Army-vet hot-legs it back to the RV and enters rather distressed covered in blood and scaring the girls whom want to know where arse-breathe is. I don't think he copes well under pressure. There are more stupid Qwaaaaark sounds, a few alien head-shots, more squelchy radio, you get the picture. Some of the crew run out of the RV in despair. Pink-top is sucked up into the sky by a green light, and the others run back inside. Dune-bug lets us know Joe has stopped breathing and is abruptly sucked out of the back window. This leaves army-vet and pretty-blonde, 4 down, 2 to go. There's lots of shaking, the windows blow out, several times, and before long the little critters are climbing in to claim their prey. They decide to find that barn and run out into the woods. Before long we see pretty-blonde banging down the door, she would be the girl from the opening sequence, except this time army-vet is hot-footing it behind her too. The aliens catch up with them and enter the barn. At this point I'm finding the Qwaaaark sounds rather distracting, they might as well wear white sheets and wave their arms about. They're captured and are taken aboard an alien craft which seems to be lined with black bin-liners, mucus ebbing from the walls, someone say 'Aliens'? We see army-vet waking up encrusted in yellow goo. He scrambles about for a bit and finds his gun whilst I scrambled to find the remote. This is as far as I got.
Well, that's my first fil, review. I'm sorry it was more of a narrative then a review, but I'm new to this. I hope you find it useful none-the-less. Night Skies (2007) - Rating: 2/5
