If you're into gaming at all you've probably already heard of BF2. If you've ever played it you probably also know it has to rank as one of the buggiest games ever made. This is a real shame as it has some awesome graphics, fantastic teamplay, and jaw-dropping maps. Did I mention the awesome graphics? It reads good on paper, and the screenshots look pretty impressive, but ultimately you need a ninja pc to play it. I recently bought a Gainward Bliss GS+ (the fastest AGP card on the market) to help bring my box up to ninja specs, it still has only 1Gb of RAM, but that ought to do for medium graphics settings. Truth is even with my new ninja'ish system I had to install several times before I found a setup that worked. I stuck with this configuration for a couple of months until an nVidia driver update a couple of days back. Since then I've been unable to play multiplayer and am ridden with freezes and CTDs (crash to desktop). A little Google soon turfs up plentiful threads with people experiencing very similar issues. The most insightful of these pretty much sums up my feelings, "WHAT A ****". It brings back the days of my old 386 with a multi-boot menu. I had customised my autoexec.bat and config.sys files for specific games tweaking them to perfection, sometimes just to get them running. I wish all it took was some tweaking to get BF2 running, but all the tweaking in the world won't fix what is essentially a bug-ridden game. To make things worse there's no SG1 on tonight, and the repeat of A town called Eureaka doesn't start until 0230 hours. What am I to do but blog my misfortunes. I have decided therefore to shell out for a new system. This rig is several years old now (okay, so it's not as ninja as it used to be) and could well do with an update. I'm eyeing up the new Conroe chips and, if I'm lucky, I might be able to get the Extreme Edition. I'll probably settle for the E6700 though. All of this is a real pain in the butt as I'll have to shift my AGP card to purchase a PCI-E equivalent. Hopefully with my new ninja Conroe, 2Gb of Special Ops OCZ RAM and a 7900GTX BF2 might actaully be playable, one can only hope. Now, where did I put that Misco catalogue?..
